But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter. Romans 7:6 In Romans 6 and 7, the apostle Paul explains that in coming to Christ we die to the law. That is, we die to the idea that we can be saved by keeping the law. We die to the law as a binding covenant authority over us. The law is no longer the governing framework of our relationship with God. Having trusted in Christ as Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to enable us to live a life that fulfills the undergirding principle of the law—love. We now serve in the newness of the Spirit.
