You shall take some of the first of all the produce of the ground … and put it in a basket and go to the place where the Lord your God chooses to make His name abide. Deuteronomy 26:2 If you’ve ever grown a vegetable garden, you know the joy of picking the first ripe tomatoes from the vine or boiling the first young potatoes. In biblical times farmers would take some of their earliest harvests and present it as an offering to the Lord. They knew He was the one who made the soil and seed, who sent the sunshine and rain, and who gave them the ability to farm the land.
